Bomb Squad Removes World War II Ordnance from Mattoon Home

MATTOON, Ill. (AP) _ The bomb squad from the University of Illinois has removed a World War II-era ordnance from a Mattoon house.

The Mattoon Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1Wf9xjY ) that relatives cleaning an elderly resident’s home found the ordnance. Police were sent to the house at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Lt. Gary Kepley of the Mattoon Police Department says police found the ordnance and called the bomb squad. The bomb technicians removed the ordnance and took it to their facility for disposal. Mattoon firefighters were called to be on standby as a precaution.

Kepley says no criminal activity was involved and no homes were evacuated.
