Wreckage of Small Plane Found in Southern Illinois Forest

EDDYVILLE, Ill. (AP)–Authorities in southern Illinois say the wreckage of a small aircraft has been found in Shawnee National Forest northwest of Eddyville.

Pope County Sheriff Jerry Suits says the plane is believed to have gone down late Sunday or early Monday. The single-engine plane was flying from Marion, Kentucky to Marion, Illinois.

Suits said the pilot’s sent his wife a text message around 8:55 p.m. Sunday, saying he was flying in rough weather and having trouble. The plane wasn’t heard from again.

Suits refused to say how many people were aboard the four-seater. However, he did say no survivors were found.

The airplane was found late Monday by a U.S. Forest Service worker following a search by air and horseback conducted by sheriff’s deputies, state police and forest service personnel.
