Knox County Building Committee Continues Courthouse Repairs

knox county courthouseAt last night’s Knox County Building Committee meeting, Committee members discussed various renovations that will take place at the Knox County Courthouse.

The committee discussed a variety of projects on the list for the courthouse, including the handrails in the newly renovated courtroom and outside the courthouse, and the maintenance of the fire escape.

Chairman Greg Bacon explained to the committee that the jury bench needs a handrail attached to it so that someone in a wheelchair would not roll off the edge and get hurt.

“In the jury box, there is a handicap spot there , and there is nothing around–they could roll off,” says Bacon. “They were made aware of that, so we went up and looked at it with Tony [of Klinger Construction] and said that we would like to see something around that box.”

Committee Member Brian Friedrich added that although the bench is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, it is a safety concern that needs to be addressed.

The committee voted to approve a pipe rail to be put in for just over $3,500.

The committee also discussed maintaining the fire escape and possibly looking into a WIRC grant for Life Safety, rather than spending thousands of dollars on replacing it.

Bacon also told the committee that he has discussed the courthouse landscaping with the Master Gardeners, and they may look into making it a community service option for violators.
