Boy Killed in Highway 26 Bicycle Accident

WGIL News Icon 250px cmpThe Knox County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that an unnamed 15-year-old boy was killed following a crash yesterday near Lake Bracken.

Authorities responded to the 500 block of Knox Highway 26 yesterday at 1:37 p.m. to find the Galesburg boy injured.

The crash involved a Sport Utility Vehicle and a bicycle which were both traveling west. Two bicyclists were reportedly travelling side by side, with the SUV approaching from behind.

Both witnesses and the driver of the vehicle told law enforcement, that as the SUV attempted to pass, the boy’s bicycle swerved into the path of the vehicle. Witnesses indicate that the SUV attempted to swerve, however, the effort was unsuccessful.

The boy was transported to Cottage Hospital, but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the boy’s identity will not be released until further investigation ensues.
Abingdon First Responders, Abingdon Police, and GHAS all assisted at the scene.

An investigation is on-going at this time.
