carlson, michaelMichael Lee Carlson, 73, of Galesburg, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at home.

Mike was born December 13, 1941 in Galesburg, the son of John Richard and Jeanette McKay Carlson.  He married Rita Altum on September 13, 1973 in Houston, TX.  Those left behind to honor Mike’s memory is his wife of 41 years, Rita of Galesburg; two sons, Jason Michael (Christine) Carlson of Kankakee and Morgan Lee (Lisa) Carlson of Galesburg; one daughter, Kimberlin (Dennis) DeYoung of Portland, OR; five grandchildren, Olivia DeYoung, Sophia DeYoung, Austyn Lee Henry, Logan Michael Carlson, and McKenna Diana Carlson; and one step granddaughter, Savannah Ojeda; a brother, David Carlson of Galesburg; and a sister, Janet McMillian of Houston, TX.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jerry and John Richard “Dick” Carlson, Jr.; and one sister, Bonita Carlson.

Mike served in the US Army from 1961 to 1962.  He was a journeyman union carpenter working for Petro-Chemical Plants for many years.  Mike was of the Baptist faith.  In his free time Mike enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Graveside services will be 12 Noon Friday, August 14, 2015 at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.  Pastor Darrell Grimm will officiate.  Military honors will be conducted.  No visitation is planned.  A funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 10:50 a.m.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
