NAACP to Host Cookout at Kiwanis Park Saturday

Galesburg-city-signAnother back to school event is coming up this weekend in Galesburg.

The local NAACP chapter will host its third annual community cookout at Kiwanis park, serving food and handing out school supplies and personal hygiene products.

Chapter President Candy Webb says the cookout is held to “unite the community.”

Webb tells WGIL, that one way the event will do that is by asking community service personnel to attend.

“We are asking for our service personnel–our police, fire, those sorts of people, to come to the park,” says Webb. “We are asking them to just come out and have a great day with the community residents–shake hands, get to know each other. We feel like it’s important for our residents to know those people who are working for them everyday and vice versa.”

Webb says new vendors will be on hand this year, such as the YMCA, who will set up a booth offering health tips.

Last year about 225 attended, a number Webb says she hopes will be higher this year. The event takes place Saturday. It will last from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
