Amtrak Station Renovation On Schedule to be Completed by End of the Month

Amtrak DepotThe Amtrak Depot is nearly complete in it’s renovation after months of work.City Associate Planner Julie Main says they are anticipating the work to be done by the end of this month. Main says they plan to hold an open house at some point, but they are working with the Illinois Department of Transportation on a day.

Main tells WGIL that some of the upgraded features include new flooring, bathrooms, and more baggage storage areas.

“They’re getting new flooring and they’ve upgraded both of the bathrooms in the station, and they’re making the doors ADA compliant,” says Main. “They also enclosed the north portico and that’s going to be used for baggage storage for Amtrak cause that’s been an issue for them, not having adequate space for baggage storage. It’s like and upgrade/renovation for the Amtrak project.”

The depot also had more parking space made available and more waiting areas by the now enclosed south portico.

Main says the station was fully funded by a combination of grants from the federal and state levels, with a total cost of just over $520,000.
