Director of Health Protection Stresses Importance of Vaccinations

Vaccine_KTSMStudents are becoming more susceptible to illnesses by being in close proximity to hundreds of other students as schools begin classes.

Vaccination concerns have risen after outbreaks of Measles in California and Mumps at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana have been reported.

Knox County Health Department Director of Health Protection Sam Jarvis says these illnesses are airborne and highly contagious, so it’s important to get vaccinated.

Jarvis tells Galesburg Live on WGIL that vaccines have been proven to work and are important for good health.

“I don’t know the exact year that these vaccines became licensed, but, really when you look at it, there has been a need for it,” says Jarvis. “The CVC, they have shown disease graphs with the prevalence of disease–when the vaccine was put in production and started being administered that year. You can see a dramatic drop in the prevalence of that disease. We know the vaccines work and that they are beneficial to your health.”

There has been wide debate on whether vaccinations cause autism in patients, and Jarvis says it’s not true, but anyone with concerns should speak with their healthcare professional.
