Galesburg Transit Facility in Route for September Finish

Galesburg-city-signGalesburg Public Transit and HandiVans are getting a new city transit facility that is expected to be completed by the end of September. That’s according to City Associate Planner Julie Main, who says they have been applying for grants since 2004 for the facility at 1025 Monmouth Boulevard.

Main tells WGIL that the new facility will have room for all the buses and HandiVans, rather than leaving them outside.

“Currently the HandiVans are stored at the city central garage outside, so it will be wonderful that the HandiVans will be stored inside in the new transit maintenance facility building,” says Main. “Central garage will still continue to do the maintenance work on the HandiVans for the city, but they’ll be able to start their pickups from the transit maintenance facility and be stored inside, so that will be less wear-and-tear on our transit vehicles. Same with Galesburg transit, they’re not able to store all their vehicles inside currently.”

Main says the 20,000 square foot project cost roughly $4.2 million, which will be fully funded by both federal and state grants.

The facility will also include a bus wash, fueling island, administrative offices and conference rooms.
