Illinois EPA Says Abandoned Laboratory Poses Health Threat

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The director of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says an abandoned laboratory in the St. Louis suburb of Millstadt poses a health threat and must be sealed.

Agency director Lisa Bonnett issued an order to seal the property after an inspection last week found containers labeled hazardous waste. The order restricts public access to the Advanced Asymmetrics Inc. site and prohibits entry to anyone other than people authorized to be there to carry out official duties.

The state agency has asked that U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to oversee the proper removal of the remaining chemicals and dismantling of the remaining portions of the laboratory.

The facility’s utilities were disconnected in 2012. The neighborhood is shared by residential homes and a senior living facility.
