Illinois Senate Considers Override of Strike-Bill Veto

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Senate is considering a vote to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of legislation giving an arbitrator final say if there’s a stalemate in contract negotiations with unionized state employees.

The Senate would vote Wednesday. Rauner sent a memo to lawmakers Tuesday asking them to nix the override idea. He is negotiating with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees on a contract to replace one that expired June 30.

AFSCME pushed the measure this spring to bar the union from striking or the government from locking out workers.

But Rauner vetoed the proposal in July. It would send any contract impasse to a third-party arbitrator who would decide contract conditions. Rauner says that would take away taxpayer power.
