Rauner Approves Moffitt’s Veteran Firefighter Bill

Don MoffittState Representative Don Moffitt sponsored a bill in the spring that would allow veterans above the age of 35 to take the firefighter exam. After passing both houses unanimously, Governor Bruce Rauner signed it into law on Monday.

Previously, the age cap to take the firefighter exam was set at 35 years old. Moffitt says this law will extend the age cap to 40 if a veteran missed the cut-off because they were actively serving.

“[It] grants eligibility to veterans who have gone above the age of 35 to still take the firefighter exam, if they reach that age while serving as a member of the military forces of our country, if they were on active duty, but still under the age of 40,” says Moffitt.

Last year, they extended the eligibility to those in the fire protection districts, and this law will add municipal fire departments as well.

Moffitt says that a veteran who wants to continue serving by becoming a firefighter should not be prohibited because of their time on active duty.
