Knox County Board To Tighten Up Budgets

knox county sealAt last night’s Knox County Finance Committee meeting, committee members stressed the importance of tightening up their budgets.

Knox County Treasurer Robin Davis told the committee that they are on their 5th consecutive month of having the highest deficit in 10 years.

Davis announced that they are currently at a deficit of just under $700,000.

Davis told WGIL that the biggest problem is the revenue stream, since they base their budget on previous years.

“A lot of the problem with the general fund in specific is the revenue stream,” says Davis. “We predict a budget based on historical trends, looking at what we project for office fees or for tax revenue. We just don’t know until we’re operating whether we are going to get that revenue or not.”

The committee set a few tentative meetings for September 10th, 17th, and 24th to specifically take a look at each committee’s budgets to find where they can cut down.

Committee member Shawn Pittman began suggesting a few places to cut expenses by centralizing supply orders and comparing costs.

Committee Chairman Greg Bacon said within the last couple years they had made a bunch of cuts, but they need to make more because they cannot have an unbalanced budget.
