CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) –The director of a Jewish center on the University of Illinois campus says a 9-foot menorah that was knocked over will be temporarily raised. But he hopes to soon have a larger, sturdier replacement.
Rabbi Dovid Tiechtel told The News-Gazette in Champaign that the damaged menorah will be re-erected Sunday morning at the Illini Chabad Jewish Center. He says the center has raised more than $7,500 toward the cost of a new menorah since the existing one was vandalized Wednesday.
Campus police spokesman Patrick Wade says that so far investigators don’t have any suspects.
Security-camera video shows a young man knocking it over before 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
It was the second time this year someone has knocked down the menorah.
