Joliet Agrees To Share Cost of New Will County Courthouse

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) –The city of Joliet has agreed to share some of the cost for a new Will County courthouse.
A statement released by Will County Board spokesman Nate Brown says the city will contribute $10 million spread out over 20 years and waive another $2.3 million in building fees.

The bigger courthouse in downtown Joliet is expected to cost $150 million. Will County Executive Larry Walsh says the city’s contribution is a “step towards supplemental funding” as the county continues its search for a dedicated revenue source.

The county aims to complete the project without raising taxes.

The current courthouse was built in 1969. The population has nearly tripled since then, and the county says the building’s 23 courtrooms lack adequate space and security.

Will County judges handle 80,000 cases annually.
