Report: Mayor Used Federal Grant To Buy SUV For His Own Use

HARVEY, Ill. (AP) –A published report says the mayor of a financially struggling Chicago suburb directed a federal grant be used to buy a $51,000 SUV for his own use.

The Chicago Tribune reports  the money was intended to buy two new police cars for Harvey, where officials said they didn’t have enough cruisers to patrol the streets.

The possible misuse was among the findings in an audit that showed widespread problems with policing.
A spokesman for Mayor Eric Kellogg said the findings were politically motivated and crime is down.

Sean Howard also says Kellogg is a part-time police officer in a neighboring department and the Chevy Tahoe is “used to deter crime.”

The audit by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office “strongly” recommends Harvey allow outside law enforcement to help with policing.
