Carl Sandburg Community College Strives For Balance in Budget And Enrollment

CSCCClasses have been in session for a week and Carl Sandburg Community College is searching for a balance in funding, despite the decrease in state aid and student enrollment.

President of the college, Dr. Lori Sundburg tells Galesburg Live on WGIL, since 2008 there has been a significant drop in state aid and a 94% loss in equalization.

“Equalization in 2008 was actually more than state aid, so we were receiving $2.6 million in 2008. This year coming up we will be getting a whopping $160,000. So we’ve lost $2 million over that seven years. It is staggering for a $15 million budget. That big of an amount”.

Sundburg says the college has to be creative and think of ideas to benefit the students and meet employer needs locally, while financially doing it with a half a million dollar deficit.

The Community College is also low on enrollment, which Sundburg says could possibly be due to the population decrease in the district, which could be a link to financial problems in this state.
