Champaign History Museum Says It May Have To Close

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) –The Champaign County Historical Museum says it may have to close because of financial problems.

Hal Balbach is co-president of the museum board. He tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette the museum has been hurt by falling income and the costs of operating a 160-year-old building.

The museum is located inside Champaign’s restored Cattle Bank building.

It includes a military room and displays of antique toys, books and clothing meant to give visitors an impression of what life was like in the area in the early 20th century.

The museum also displays artwork by local painter Louise Woodroofe, who captured scenes of circus life while traveling with Ringling Bros. in the 1930s.

Balbach says future possibilities include turning it into a virtual museum by photographing the collection and putting it online.
