Indiana Quarry’s Discharge Worries Illinois River Watchers

KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) — A new limestone quarry in Indiana has permits to discharge water to a tributary of the Kankakee River, raising concerns in Illinois about fish habitat and flooding.

The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reports that Singleton Stone’s quarry in Lake County, Indiana, plans to pump 12 million to 36 million gallons daily into what’s called the Singleton Ditch. The ditch is a tributary to the Kankakee River.

Kankakee River community residents in Illinois worry about rising sand levels. Kankakee River Basin Commission President J.R. Black says sand from the ditch already causes flooding and ruins fish habitat.

Eugene Yarkie, vice-president of Singleton Stone’s parent company, says pumping more than 12 million gallons in a day will be rare. He says to expect 2 million to 3 million gallons of extra water.
