Seven Sousaphones, Three Years, One Goal of $50,000

9-4-14 Galesburg High SchoolSeven sousaphones have left their mark at Galesburg High School, two of which have seen 80 years of use in the Marching Streaks Band.

Since the current sousaphones are close to hitting their last note, GHS Fine Arts Coordinator Dean Petrie tells Galesburg Morning News on WGIL it’s time the large brass instruments were replaced.

“It’s really expensive to not only get the instruments, but then to maintain them as well,” says Petrie. “These instruments, because they have been repaired so many times, we are running into more serious problems now.”

Petrie says he and the GHS Band Directors had the idea to replace the seven last year, but one sousaphone alone can be priced between $7,000 to $7,500 each.

He says a fundraiser was the best option to reach the cost of what could cover these purchases.

“I started putting together thoughts about how we might go about raising funds. Our goal is $50,000 and I have set a goal of three years to raise that.”

Petrie says he is thankful to have a community that is supportive of the arts and willing to contribute in hopes of reaching the goal.
