House Wants Motor-Fuel Tax Money To Go to Local Governments

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois House is considering legislation to free up millions of dollars in fuel-tax revenue owed to local governments.

Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie of Chicago introduced the measure Tuesday. It authorizes releasing $146 million in motor fuel taxes to counties, cities and road districts for costs through Sept. 30.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration had not distributed the local portion of the 19-cents-a-gallon tax on fuel since July 1 because

Republican Rauner and legislative Democrats haven’t agreed on a budget.

Guy Tridgell is a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He says since July 1, the state has collected $57 million in motor fuel taxes.

Other motor-fuel tax money is going to state road and construction funds because of separate appropriation authority.
