Nursing-Home Residents’ Names Used in Alleged Chicago Fraud

CHICAGO (AP) — A 28-year-old Chicago woman faces multiple charges for allegedly seeking federal tax refunds by using, in some cases, the personal information of nursing-home residents without their knowledge.

A Monday statement from the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago says Shantell Winters is charged with filing a false claim, identity fraud and wire fraud.

She allegedly filed a dozen individual income tax returns. Prosecutors say in some cases individuals did know their names were being used. The indictment says Winters, among other things, claimed false deductions and education credits.

The indictment was returned last week. It was announced Monday by U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon and the head of the IRS’ criminal investigation office in Chicago, Stephen Boyd.

A court docket didn’t include a name of Winters’ lawyer. Her arraignment is Aug. 27.
