Rauner Promotes Adjutant General, Names His Assistant

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has promoted National Guard Adjutant General Richard J. Hayes Jr. to major general and appointed Brig. Gen. Michael Zerbonia to the guard’s assistant adjutant general post.

Rauner in May named Hayes adjutant general, noting he served in Serbia as part of a NATO task force, and led relief task forces in New Orleans after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Hayes graduated from the U.S. Army War College and the National Defense University Joint Forces College Advance Joint Professional Military Education program.

Zerbonia served as the National Guard’s Land Forces Component Commander, while serving fulltime with the Illinois State Police.

Rauner said Zerbonia is a combat veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan, with more than 30 years of military experience who has the “trust of his soldiers.”
