Seizing Assets of Ex-Dixon Comptroller is Balancing Act

DIXON, Ill. (AP) — The U.S. Marshal’s Asset Forfeiture Division is recovering the assets of imprisoned former Dixon comptroller Rita Crundwell, but officials say not all assets are equal.

The Telegraph in Dixon reports division chief inspector Jason Wojdylo recently traveled to Oklahoma to see a saddle given by Crundwell as a gift. After an inspection, it was deemed to be of enough value to seize.

Although the government has recouped only $9.5 million by selling her possessions, Wojdylo says not all her assets are worth seizing. He says some items aren’t seized because they don’t have resale value, or because they would cost too much to store to net a profit.

Crundwell is serving a prison sentence for embezzling almost $54 million from the northern Illinois city. She owes the city $53 million in restitution.
