West Nile Prevention Outlined For Knox County

West_Nile_Logo_FnlCases of the West Nile Virus in Illinois have been detected as little as two days ago, and locally measures are being taken to protect from the spread.

Knox County Director of Health Protection Sam Jarvis says the virus can be somewhat temperature dependent.

This year there have been lower temperatures spread across the state, which has resulted in a lower number of cases statewide according to Jarvis.

Jarvis tells WGIL, that although there have been no recent reports in the area, it is important to take precautions and prevent the virus from possibly developing and spreading in Knox County.

“The best way to prevent mosquito bites are when you’re out past dusk or dawn, those are the times to wear sleeves and long pants and use mosquito repellent,” says Jarvis. “There are other things that people can do in their yard and home as well, like using catch basins and other things. When you think about it, small buckets laying around the yard, bird baths, and kiddie pools need to be changed out weekly.”

Jarvis adds keeping the three R’s in mind of reducing exposure, repealing mosquitoes, and reporting of any mosquito breeding grounds is the best method of preventing the possible spread locally.
