Grant Will Support Chicago Jobs Program for Ex-Offenders

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal grant will allow the Chicago Transit Authority to continue a diesel mechanics training program for ex-offenders and others facing challenges re-entering the workforce.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush announced the $750,000 grant on Wednesday.

The mechanics training is part of the CTA’s Second Chance Program, which provides job skills and career opportunities to nonviolent ex-offenders, victims of abuse and others confronting barriers to employment.

Since 2011, more than 500 people have participated in the program. One hundred of them have been hired by the CTA, including seven in managerial positions.
