Union, Mitsubishi Negotiate in Hopes of Plant Being Bought

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Union officials say they’re pursuing contract negotiations with Mitsubishi even though the automaker plans to shut down its central Illinois plant.

Kyle Young is vice president of UAW Local 2488 in Bloomington. He tells The Pantagraph that they’re still hoping someone will buy the facility.

Mitsubishi announced last month that it’ll close the plant in Normal. The company hopes to find a buyer but the plant’s 1,200 employees will be out of work when the facility closes in November.

The current contract expires at 11:59 p.m. Monday. Union officials are hoping for an extension.
Company officials didn’t offer comment.

In the wake of the closure announcement, area officials decided to set up a task force to help employees potentially losing their jobs and the company.
