Drivers Urged to Plan for Downtown Chicago Roadwork, Closure

CHICAGO (AP) — City and state transportation officials are warning motorists to prepare for another weekend of road closures and heavy traffic in Chicago.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin closing lanes surrounding the Jane Byrne Interchange starting Friday night. It’s part of work to modernize the 1950s-era structure and minimize congestion at one of the nation’s worst bottlenecks.

The interchange is where the Dan Ryan, Eisenhower and Kennedy expressways and Congress Parkway meet. This is the second of four weekends when closures are expected.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn says motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes and public transportation.

The Chicago Transit Authority is planning to run additional trains and buses. But the agency also is planning to temporarily reroute and suspend some lines for its own construction projects.
