Governor Seeks Federal Help for Storm-Affected Areas

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner has asked the U.S. Small Business Administration to allow people in seven northeast Illinois counties to apply for low-interest loans to help with storm recovery.

Rauner on Thursday asked for help for residents and businesses in Grundy and Iroquois counties as well as counties contiguous to the two.

Recent assessments found that tornadoes, floods and storms have destroyed or caused severe damage to 297 homes and less severe damage to about 1,400 others over a six-week period this summer.

Illinois Emergency Management Agency director James K. Joseph said if approved the SBA help would be valuable to homeowners and business people.

Illinois did not meet financial thresholds for damage assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
