Ex-Washington Mayor Don Gronewald Dead at 83

WASHINGTON, Ill. (AP) – Longtime Washington Mayor Don Gronewald, probably better known as a town-square pharmacy owner, has died. He was 83. Gronewald, mayor of the central Illinois town from 1989 to 2001, died Tuesday at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

A pharmacist with a shop on the town square for 42 years, Gronewald was active for years as treasurer of the Tazewell County Republican Committee.

Mayor Gary Manier succeeded Gronewald in 2001. Manier says Gronewald was a significant presence in the community. He told the (Peoria) Journal Star, “If you were sick, you came to him for your prescription.” And he says Gronewald hired scores of high school students in the store.

Gronewald was also a 56-year member of the Washington Rotary Club.
