Autopsy Set in Weekend Swansea Stabbing That Left Woman Dead

SWANSEA, Ill. (AP) — An autopsy report and charges could come later in the day in connection with a stabbing at a southwest Illinois apartment complex that left a woman dead and her 9-year-old son severely injured.

Swansea police said officers responding to a disturbance Saturday evening found the boy with a neck stab wound. The boy’s mother, 38-year-old Sharetta L. Day, was found lying on the ground with multiple stab wounds. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The suspect’s name wasn’t released pending formal charges. The Belleville News Democrat reports Swansea Police Chief Steve Johnson said the case will be presented Monday to St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly.

The boy was airlifted to a hospital and underwent surgery.

Police say the suspect and Day were briefly in a relationship.
