Chicago Schools CEO Wants 5 Hires For Total $900K Salary

CHICAGO (AP) — The head of Chicago Public Schools has recommended the district spend more than $900,000 to hire five senior level employees. It’s a move that comes after CEO Forrest Claypool said he cut expenses and laid off nine senior aides to save the cash-strapped district $1 million annually.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the newly-named CEO submitted the recommendations to the school board last week. Many of the new employees he’s worked with before. The information wasn’t included on the board’s agenda, which school officials say is privately deliberated and then voted on publicly because it involves personnel.

Board members approved the recommendations.

District officials defended the hirings, saying the expertise is needed.

Claypool has already hired three others for $360,000, making more than $1.2 million in senior level hires.
