Judge: Verdict in Chicago Lawyer’s Case Expected Monday

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge at a Chicago bench trial says he’ll return with a verdict Monday in the case of a prominent lawyer accused of instructing clients and witnesses to lie.

Judge Harry Leinenweber said after closing arguments on Thursday he’ll have a decision in Beau Brindley’s case on Monday.

Brindley faces multiple counts of obstruction and perjury. A single count of perjury carries a maximum 20-year prison term.

Prosecutor Michael Chmelar (SCHMEL’-er) says fabrications by Brindley distorted justice in half-a-dozen criminal cases. He says Brindley gave scripts of falsified answers to clients and witnesses that he told them to memorize.

Brindley’s lawyer, Cynthia Giacchetti, agreed lying was at the core of the trial. But she said it was Brindley’s old clients who lied as government witnesses against Brindley.
