Cubit Hopes to Project Professionalism in New Illinois Role

University of IllinoisCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Interim Illinois football coach Bill Cubit joked about the blue blazer he wore to talk to reporters on a warm day Monday.

But the 61-year-old coach said he hoped wearing the jacket showed professionalism.

Illinois named Cubit to the jo Friday after it fired Tim Beckman for allegedly interfering with medical decision-making for players. He denies any wrongdoing.

Cubit has taken a long road to his first top job at a major-conference school. At 61 his only previous head-coaching job was at Western Michigan.

He said he hopes the team can serve as a rallying point during a touchy time for the University of Illinois. Players like offensive lineman Teddy Karras say they’re ready to play for Cubit.
