Knox College Still Raising Funds for New Art Building

Knox CollegeKnox College received a $5 million donation from alumni Dick and Joan Whitcomb in April 2014 to go towards a new building for the art and art history programs.Chief Communications Officer Megan Scott says the  the current building will house the performing arts.

Scott tells WGIL that the new building, named the Whitcomb Art Building, will include studio space for various types of art, such as welding, sculpting, and painting.

“Part of what goes into that space was, obviously we need studio space,” says Scott. “Art, especially studio art, incorporates a lot of different types of art, it’s 3-D, it’s digital, it’s all these things. You have people who are welding, it’s not just painting anymore.”

Scott says when they gathered with architects, they wanted to make the space manipulative for any kind of art, and also include a large amount of lighting as well.

The new building will be on the corner of Prairie street and South street and will break ground once they obtain 90% of construction costs, which amount to just over $6 million.

Scott says they are working with other individual donors to continue fundraising to get the building started, but anticipates the building opening roughly 1 year to 18 months from the start of construction.

Scott says the total cost of the project is roughly $8.6 million.
