Involvement in Phone Scam Leaves Alexis Woman Out Nearly $25,000

galesburgpolicelogoAn elderly woman recently reported $24,900 stolen in a money scam.

The Alexis women received a false phone call in the beginning of the year from a caller claiming to be from the City of Las Vegas, telling her she won $4M in a lottery.

According to Galesburg Police reports, she was told on the phone to pay taxes and fees on the money before it was to be released to her.

The woman made five separate payments containing large sums of money to a “Vilmore Greene” account in Delray Beach, Florida. She then became suspicious if she would receive her winnings.

The first payment in January was $3,700, which was wire transferred through her bank.

Another three more payments were forwarded to Vilmore Greene in July. The woman says in reports she cannot recall the details of the transaction with the last $4,000 payment.

Authorities have reportedly been lead to dead ends on the issue.

The recent scam is one of many received each year, according to Police Chief David Christensen. GPD has said to never respond to anyone calling about winning an item and wanting money up front to receive it.
