U.S. Navy Retiree Reunites With K-9 at Welcoming Ceremony Friday

FullSizeRenderTomorrow, Abingdon Police Officer and U.S. Navy Retiree Chris Spears will be reunited with his Navy K-9 Rossi at a welcoming ceremony.

Hosted by Shave for the Brave, the event will be held at the Connie Nott Dog Park on Carl Sandburg Drive from three to five p.m.

Shave for the Brave Coordinator Crystal Wilson tells Galesburg‘s Morning News on WGIL that several local agencies will be parading around to welcome the K-9 home.

“From three to five we will be lining up,” says Wilson. “We are going to have a caravan–the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Galesburg Police Department, Galesburg Fire, Abingdon Police Department, and we are going to have an awesome caravan coming through with Chris, his dog, and his daughters.”

Wilson says Shave for the Brave got involved because they honor veterans, and Wilson wanted to honor this veteran dog.

Spears says Rossi is a 9 year old Czech Shepard that was trained to be able to sniff out explosives.

He was deployed with Rossi and even spent time in Afghanistan with Spears’ best friend.

Spears says K-9 handlers don’t always get the opportunity to reconnect with their K-9s, but he fought to get Rossi back once he retired from the Navy.

Anyone can bring their own dogs to the event as long as they are on a leash, non-aggressive and caught up on all their vaccines.
