America Legion Struggles to Stay Afloat

American LegionGalesburg American Legion Post 285 is struggling financially, but is not expected to close in the near future. That’s according to Post Commander Tim Roll, who says they aren’t at risk of closing, but they are on “life support”.

Roll tells WGIL that they are working on finding new fundraising efforts to bring in more money.

“Currently, the American Legion here in Galesburg, we have some small financial issues that have come up. Unfortunately, we are a non-profit organization that has always survived on donations and our fundraisers from the fish fries and other things we have done,” says Roll. “Unfortunately, everything has a price to do them. We really don’t have the financial capabilities of doing all the same things that we used to, so we’re going to have to reinvent new things to do.”

Roll says some of the new ideas they are working on are bringing back more fish fries, raffling off a rifle and holding concealed carry classes at the Legion.
Roll says they are also working on fundraisers for the baseball team and have lowered the prices for the banquet hall to try to encourage more people to book their space.
