galesburg fire patchThe Galesburg Fire Department will be at several intersections around town collecting money for their “Fill the Boot” fundraiser. The funds will go towards a Central Illinois Muscular Dystrophy Association chapter.

Fire Captain Jim Pendergast says they have been participating in the international fundraiser for roughly 20 years, but internationally firefighters have been raising funds for over 60 years.

Firefighter Darren Clayton tells Galesburg Live that they have raised over $361,000 over the years, with a goal of $30,000 each year.

“We’ve actually raised, since the last 17 years, we’ve raised $361,000 just through Galesburg Fire Department. We’re proud of that, and I know people say ‘we’re not trying to brag’ but it’s more, it makes you feel good about our community,” says Clayton. “It’s our community that wants to give us the money, we’re just the messengers taking the money in. It’s really nice, I think we averaged it up, it’s $21,000 a year.”

Firefighters can be found on intersections such as Lincoln and Losey, South and Chambers and Broad and Carl Sandburg Drive from roughly 8 a.m. through 6 or 7 p.m. collecting money.
