Great Cardboard Boat Regatta Sets Sail this Weekend

BoatRegattaLake Storey Beach will be filled with cardboard and other supplies to make boats for the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta this Sunday.Galesburg Recreation Supervisor Elizabeth Varner says she believe this is the 22nd year they are holding the event in Galesburg.

Varner tells WGIL that in addition to the race awards, other fun awards will be given out as well.

“When they come out, we’ve got 3 different classes of boats. We also give awards for different categories as well,” says Varner. “So, we have the race awards that we’re giving out, as well as the awards such as the vogue award, the pride of the regatta, the titanic award, that’s always a fun one. So, we have different awards and then 3 different classes of boats that are actually racing.”

Class 1 boats are made entirely of corrugated cardboard and moved by paddles or oars. Class 2 boats are moved by man-power devices such as paddle-wheels or sails. The 3rd class is instant boats made by a secret kit provided at the Regatta.

The event will start with registration at 11 a.m. with races beginning at 1 p.m.

Varner says there is still time to make your cardboard boat before Sunday, but you can always show up for the instant boat race and make one at the event.
