LaHood Wins Special Election

Darin LaHoodThe 18th Congressional District has named its representative. State Senator Darin LaHood won the election yesterday over Democratic Quincy Teacher Rob Mellon.

LaHood takes over for former Congressman Aaron Schock who resigned amid a spending scandal this past March.

With the win, LaHood will join in his fathers footsteps. Ray LaHood served as the rep of the18th from 1995 until 2009 when Schock was seated.

Darin LaHood becomes just the fourth person since 1957 to represent the district. Prior to Ray LaHood, longtime Congressman Bob Michel held the office for 38 years.

The new Congressman has said in multiple interviews with WGIL that Republican leaders need to be doing more with majorities in the House and Senate. LaHood has also said that fiscal responsibility in the State of Illinois is his number one priority.

With only one race on the ballot for an oddly timed September election, turnout was reportedly low yesterday.
