Public Hearing to be Held for Code Enforcement in Galesburg

Galesburg-city-signA public hearing will be held tonight for Galesburg residents to express concerns or ideas about property code enforcement in Galesburg. The hearing will be held by Aldermen Wayne Dennis and Jeremy Karlin, who have met with constituents recently who raised concern about vacant and decaying houses.

Galesburg resident Ranee Collura tells WGIL that it’s not entirely just the looks of the properties, but the vacant houses start to create issues for the area.

“Along with these houses, you’ve got the city ordinance violations because usually when they sit, the weeds are everywhere and overgrown trees,” says Collura. “You have criminal activity sometimes going on in these homes. You’ve got to watch them all the time because the windows get broke out and we’ve had squatters in them. A lot of people look at it and say ‘well, it’s just a vacant house’, but it’s not, it creates a lot of problems for the neighborhood.”

According to a press release, Karlin stated “Ultimately, this should help the city administration develop the next step to address the problem.”

The hearing will be held tonight at Galesburg City Hall and will start at 6 p.m.
