Police Label Thursday Shooting as Murder-Suicide

Dietrich shootingGalesburg Police have confirmed that the shooting deaths that took place near Dietrich Avenue last Thursday have been labeled as a murder-suicide.

That’s according to Captain Rodney Riggs, who confirmed that authorities believe 51-year-old Jeffery R. Phillips shot his wife 51-year-old Jane E. Phillips before turning the gun on himself.

Police responded to the scene around 3 p.m. last Thursday where both were discovered. Riggs said last week, that Jane Phillips was found deceased near the treeline of a nearby field inside of a 2012 Gray Ford vehicle.

Jeffery Phillips was found dead near 164 Dietrich. Riggs indicated that a pistol was found near the roadway as well.

Thursday’s shooting closed off Dietrich for the better half of the afternoon and evening. Steele Elementary school which is located three blocks West was put on lockdown for a short time as well.

Jeffery and Jane were both 1982 Galesburg High School graduates. According to a representative handling a memorial collection, there are three surviving children.
