Firefighters Extinguish Midday Fire on Elm

elm fire 2Galesburg Firefighters responded to a fire this afternoon at 30 North Elm Street.

Authorities were called at 12:14 p.m. to a single story, two apartment residence. A family evacuated the building and no injuries have been reported.

That’s according to Fire Chief Tom Simkins, who says the cause of the fire remains unknown at this point. Simkins says the kitchen area of the apartment in the front of the residence was destroyed, and that much of the interior of the home has excessive smoke damage.

It is unclear whether or not the building will be salvageable at this point.

Simkins also mentioned at the scene that six animals were rescued from the interior flames.

Firefighters could be seen extinguishing hotspots, and using chainsaws and axes to cut a hole into the side of the home to alleviate smoke.

Visible white smoke exiting from the rear of the home was evident as well.

GPD was assisted at the scene by Galesburg Police, the Galesburg Hospital’s Ambulance Service and Ameren. Investigation is on-going.elm fire
