Finance Committee Considers Halting County Spending

knox county sealLast night at the finance committee meeting, committee members discussed the issues with budgets and suggested curtailing all spending for the next couple of months.

In part due to the lack of funds from the state, the county is facing a roughly $250,000 deficit by November.

After a lengthy discussion, the committee decided they would propose a halt of all spending for two months, unless it is an emergency.

Chairman Greg Bacon and committee member Brian Friedrich summarized the agreement saying they would halt expenses over $250, as well as cut conferences and overtime pay.

“We will send out a letter to let them know that all spending is curtailed to emergency spending only, and anything above $250 has to come to the finance committee,” says Bacon. “If we need a special finance committee, we will do it at no charge to the county.”

Bacon and County Treasurer Robin Davis both said part of the issue is unfunded mandates that the county is expected to pay with no additional revenue source.

Bacon said they need to reach out to state representatives about this, because something has to be done.

The committee said they will also start to be stricter on department budgets as they go over them the next couple of weeks.

The first county budget committee meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m.
