Bustos Urges Boehner to Keep House in Session to Prevent Government Shutdown

Bustos picCongresswoman Cheri Bustos announced that her and 79 other members of congress have sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner urging him to keep the House in session every day to prevent another government shutdown.According to a press release, the letter asks that the House of Representatives be kept in session every day until October 1st. The letter states that when the government shut down for 16 days in 2013, it cost the U.S. economy $24 billion.

Bustos mentioned in her floor speech that 120,000 fewer private sector jobs were created and 20,000 Veterans’ disability claims per week were affected by the 2013 shutdown.

Bustos stated, “The stakes are just too high for Washington dysfunction or partisan gridlock to get in the way of a real solution for working families.”

As of right now, more recess days than working days are scheduled up until October 1st.

Currently the government has been unable to agree on a bipartisan consensus to fund the government. One of the major topics causing disagreement is the conservative republican effort to de-fund Planned Parenthood from any government spending bill.
