Council to Consider Goose Hunt Tonight

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015The Galesburg City Council will meet tonight and alderman are expected to make a decision regarding geese overpopulation issues that are taking place at Lake Storey.

According to council documents, Canadian geese have “caused serious deleterious effects, due to large amounts of manure.”

An organized hunt is on the agenda to deal with the issue. If passed, city staff would work in correlation with Galesburg Police and perform a “limited hunt.”

Parks and Recreation Director Larry Cox tells WGIL, that the city has previously tried a number of tactics with little success.

“We have tried various techniques to harass the geese–try to get them to move off of the lake and park properties and have limited success,” says Cox. “This is just kind of the next step.”

The hunt would be done under the recommendation of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

“The migratory birds are highly regulated, so it will be according to all of the regulations. It’s basically designed to take a few of them out and encourage the rest of them not to stick around,” says Cox.

If passed, meat from geese killed will reportedly be donated to local food banks. Council will meet to discuss the issue, as well as others tonight at 6:30 p.m.  inside of City Hall.
