Bustos Comments on Boehner Resignation, Pope Francis Speech

Bustos With BoehnerU.S. House Speaker John Boehner shockingly announced earlier today, that he would be resigning from his position effective October 1st.

The resignation came amid tension from Republican leaders in Washington, who have questioned his unwillingness to support various GOP measures.

Locally, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos commented on the surprising resignation. In a statement acquired by WGIL, Bustos wished Boehner well on his retirement, and thanked the Ohio Republican for his years of public service.

Perhaps a tension that proved too much for Boehner included raising concerns over another Government shutdown.

Over the past month, Bustos has been spearheading a motion urging Boehner to keep the House in session everyday until a deal is a reached before the deadline of October 1st.

A letter was signed in support by nearly 80 House Democrats.

Bustos says in the statement that “I am hopeful during his final month in Congress, that we will be able to move past gridlock and not only avoid a government shutdown, but also make progress on bipartisan priorities such as passing a long-term highway bill and re-authorizing the Export-Import Bank.”

In an unrelated note, Bustos commented on the recent speech Pope Francis gave to a joint session of Congress yesterday.

Bustos attended that session and said she was “inspired by the Pope’s message of working together in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.”
