Monmouth Resident Donates First Lady Letters

Lew GouldLetters from two former First Ladies are among hundreds of items that were recently donated to Monmouth College.

Monmouth resident Lew Gould donated the items by First Ladies Lady Bird Johnson and Roslynn Carter.

Gould was a history professor at the University of Texas for more than 31 years, where he taught a course about the lives of First Ladies in the 20th Century.

Gould says President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson even made an appearance in the class at one point.

A current Monmouth Professor has ties to Gould and his collection. Monmouth History professor and bibliographer of the National First Ladies Library Stacy Cordery was a student of Gould’s. She labels Gould as her mentor.

Among items in the donation, include personal correspondence letters between Gould and First Lady Johnson, and letters to her aides.

Two binders worth of material have been donated. Gould says, ” it just seemed silly to have it sitting on my bookshelf.”
