Caterpillar Announces 230 Layoffs at Factory in East Peoria

EAST PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Caterpillar Inc. says it is indefinitely laying off 230 workers at its plant in East Peoria.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that layoffs will start Oct. 12 and that they make a total of 500 Caterpillar factory workers laid off in East Peoria so far this year.

The Peoria-based manufacturer announced last week that it is planning another round of job cuts that could exceed 10,000 people through 2018. The company said it will cut as many as 5,000 people mostly by the end of this year from its salaried and management workforce.

Spokesman Lisa Miller says Caterpillar “must continue to align production with demand” in addition to the “cost reduction and restructuring actions” announced last week.
